An Exhibition of Unspeakable Things
An Exhibition of Unspeakable Things
From 28th October 2007 to 6th April 2008
Lovecraft’s Commonplace Book is a compilation of ideas, wherein the reader encounters nameless abominations, giant underwater cities, ancient artifacts awakening forbidden memories, dreams fading into reality, new dimensions appearing at the corner of the eye, and creatures from another time hidden in human guise. These and other fragmentary concepts are listed in a notebook that Lovecraft planned to revisit when developing later works of fiction.
Recorded between 1919 and 1934, these 222 short notes are based on dreams, readings or casual incidents. As Lovecraft writes at the beginning of the booklet, very few of these ideas ” are actually developed plots – they are merely suggestions designed to set the memory or imagination working “.
Following an invitation from Maison d’Ailleurs to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Lovecraft’s death in an exhibition, one hundred artists have used this journal to explore the abysmal depths evoked by this singular author, transforming the museum in a place filled with things better left unspoken…
